Now that it's heating up, we are looking for any excuse to get out of the triple digit heat. This past weekend, Erika and I drove down to hike Madera Canyon, where it was 15 degrees cooler than Tucson.
We hiked up to "Josephine Saddle" in a loop. We hiked up Old Baldy trail, which was a steeper climb, and ended up being pretty challenging. As Erika put it, it was a real "Baldy-buster." Getting to the top after a 2 mile non-stop climb was pretty rewarding though.
There is a memorial near the saddle for three Boy Scouts who passed away in the area back in the 50's. It's somber, but beautiful.
We set up our hammocks and straight chilled for a while in the area. It was nice to take a break and just listen to the wind in the trees.
We took Super Trail on the way back down, which was a little more gradual (thank goodness because my knees would have been hurting otherwise), and there were so many beautiful look out points where you could see for MILES!
Overall, it was a great hike. In total we went 6.2 miles and about 4 hours. Even though it wasn't far, it felt like we got away, which was nice.
